Global Development: Public Health & Nutrition Solutions

As articulated in the 3rd Sustainable Development Goal, good health and well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development and as such should be available to every human being on our planet.  Since the turn of the century much work has been done to increase life expectancy, reduce child and maternal mortality, increase access to clean water and sanitation, reduce malaria, tuberculosis, polio and the spread of HIV/AIDS. However, many more must be done on the part of the international community to achieve good health and well-being at all ages for all.  Eighty percent of the deaths of children under five occur in Africa and Southeast Asia, in developing countries the maternal mortality rate is still 14 times the rate in developed countries, gender inequalities lead to discrimination & violence toward women & girls putting them at greater risk for HIV infection , and HIV is the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age.
